fitness tip of the day

December 31st holds a whole lot of expectation. There is something invigorating about a new year. It's a chance for rebirth. It's a time to rebuild. Old habits can be left behind and the opportunity to improve our lives seems tangible and exciting. Resolutions are made with vigor and zest. Dedication twinged with certainty fuels the early part of January. The decorations are put away, social obligations dwindle and the last holiday treat is consumed. The expectations we had for the New Year are replaced with a feeling of dread and fatigue. A few short weeks ago the idea of waking up at 5am for a workout seems doable. Where did all the motivation go? Fitness Tip of the Day: Create categorized goals for fitness in the new year. If an exercise regime has been missing from your life for some time the most effective way to reincorporate a fitness routine is by making it a habit. Creating reasonable goals that can be attained with success for both the long and short term is imperative when implementing a lifestyle change. Reaching a short term goal is motivating. What is the key to achieving a short term goal? Create a goal that is doable for your level of fitness. It's unlikely anybody can lose twenty five pounds in a few short months. It is equally unlikely a body that has not been cared for with daily exercise will become a sculpted work of art after a few workouts. Instead, focus on groups of short term goals that will help you reach your long term fitness goal. Fitness Tip of the Day: Just Do It! Commit to one week of exercise. A visual reminder is helpful. Check off each day as you complete your fitness goal. Sustaining workouts that last several hours each day is not realistic. Instead, commit to twenty minutes a day. Let your body know things are changing. Gentle stretching, yoga and walking are terrific ways to ease in to a year long routine of daily physical movement. Most people experience an increase in energy thanks to a healthy dose of endorphins. There will never be a perfect time to start. Just do it.
